Database resources used on this site

The following is a list of database resources used on this site.  Each section defines a data Table: giving its structure, content and source.

Lepidoptera

This is the basic lookup reference for species names used on this site.  Included are scientific and vernacular names plus Bradley and Fletcher code numbers for all UK recorded Lepidoptera.  Sub-species and forms etc. are excluded.  Also provided is a field to identify the micro, macro and butterfly groups.

SomersetList

This is 'The Somerset List' and includes all species of Lepidoptera recorded in VC5 and 6.

The Status description is a short statement based on information in our database.  If there are no recent (post 1980) records this is stated. If the species is known from only one record this is shown and annotated if unconfirmed.  Otherwise the species is put into 1 of 4 abundance classes (Common, Frequent, Occasional and Rare) and 1 of 4 distribution classes (Widespread, Generally distributed, Local and Very local).

Turner

Provides Turner's 1955 checklist with his comments on status.  Scientific names are exactly as used in this publication and are resolved using the TurnerTranslation Table.  Where Turner has noted that a species perhaps shouldn't be included (i.e. it is enclosed in square brackets in his list) then the comments are annotated with a †.
